Games Like Dark and Darker: A Free Browser Alternative

Looking for games like Dark and Darker without another download? VAULTREAVE keeps the dive, loot and extract stakes in a free, top-down browser game you can start right now.

Most lists of "games like Dark and Darker" point at paid PC clients on Steam. That is fine if you want another install. This page answers a narrower question: what if you want that extraction-dungeon tension in a free game that starts instantly in the browser? VAULTREAVE is our answer — and below it, an honest, fact-checked look at the paid alternatives, including Dark and Darker itself.

Where it is different

Other real alternatives, fact-checked

If a downloadable PC game is on the table, these are the options we could verify — the live ones, and the shut-down ones people still get recommended. Prices and models change — confirm on each store page.

Dark and Darker (Ironmace)

The game this page is named after. First-person fantasy extraction on PC (Steam and Epic Games Store). At the time of writing, the base version is free to play, with a paid upgrade of about $30 that unlocks High-Roller mode, full marketplace trading, and additional character slots. Requires a client download.

Eldegarde — formerly Legacy: Steel & Sorcery (offline)

If you are searching for Legacy: Steel & Sorcery, this is the same game under a new name — Notorious Studios renamed it Eldegarde ahead of the 1.0 release. The third-person fantasy PvPvE extraction RPG entered Steam early access on February 12, 2025; version 1.0 launched on January 21, 2026 with PvE, PvPvE and arena modes. On March 4, 2026, Notorious announced that Eldegarde would no longer be sold and would remain playable only through March 31 before going offline indefinitely. It is no longer available to buy or play. See the official shutdown announcement.

Versus VAULTREAVE: While it was active, Eldegarde offered full 3D third-person combat through a Windows client. It is now a historical comparison rather than a playable recommendation. VAULTREAVE offers the extraction loop in a different form: free, nothing to install, top-down 2D pixel instead of 3D, opening in a browser tab on desktop or phone.

Escape from Tarkov (Battlestate Games)

Not a dungeon crawler — it is the modern-military extraction shooter that popularized the genre's stakes. Version 1.0 released on November 15, 2025 and it is now available on Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Battlestate's own launcher; the standard edition costs around $50. Listed here for players drawn to extraction tension more than to fantasy.

Dungeonborne (Mithril Interactive) — shut down, and what to play instead

Dungeonborne was the closest thing the genre had to a free Dark and Darker: a free-to-play, first-person PvPvE extraction dungeon crawler with seven fantasy classes, launched into Steam early access in July 2024. It peaked at close to 40,000 concurrent players on Steam that month. Player reception then turned on balance problems and cheating that went unpatched, and updates went quiet after the September 2024 pre-season, leaving the Steam rating "Mostly Negative" and concurrents in double digits. Mithril Interactive announced the closure on February 28, 2025, disabling new account registration and in-game purchases the same day, and terminated the servers on May 28, 2025. Timeline verified August 2026.

If you came from Dungeonborne, the thing you are actually missing is a specific combination: fantasy extraction that costs nothing to try. Dungeonborne proved that demand exists — and the currently playable third-party options above are PC clients with a download, either paid outright or paid to unlock their full mode set. That slot is the one VAULTREAVE is built for: free, no launcher, no install, running in a browser tab on desktop or phone, with the same dive, loot, extract stakes, classes and skill trees, gear affixes, and the greed decision between the safe exit and one floor deeper.

Be clear about what does not carry over: VAULTREAVE is a top-down 2D pixel crawler, not 3D first-person. If Dungeonborne's first-person melee feel is the part you are trying to replace, this is not a drop-in substitute — it is the same loop in a different view, available instantly and at no cost.

Gone, but still searched for

Dark and Darker Mobile (Krafton) was renamed Abyss of Dungeons during its soft launch and ended service on January 20, 2026. It joins Eldegarde and Dungeonborne among frequently recommended alternatives that are no longer playable; a list that presents any of them as a current option is out of date.

FAQ

Is VAULTREAVE really free and browser-based?

Yes. VAULTREAVE is free to play and starts directly in your browser on desktop or mobile — no client download or install. Optional cosmetic and convenience purchases exist, with no paid stats. You can optionally add it to your home screen as a PWA for a fullscreen, app-like experience.

Is Dark and Darker itself free now?

At the time of writing, the base version of Dark and Darker is free to play on Steam and the Epic Games Store, with a paid upgrade (about $30) that unlocks High-Roller mode, full marketplace trading, and more character slots. It still requires downloading a PC client. Check the store page for current terms.

Is VAULTREAVE affiliated with Dark and Darker or Ironmace?

No. VAULTREAVE is an independent game with no connection to Ironmace or Dark and Darker. The name is used here only to describe a genre comparison; all trademarks belong to their respective owners.

What happened to Dungeonborne, Eldegarde, and Dark and Darker Mobile?

All three have shut down. Dungeonborne's servers closed on May 28, 2025. Eldegarde, formerly Legacy: Steel & Sorcery, was removed from sale in March 2026 and went offline indefinitely on March 31, 2026. Dark and Darker Mobile was renamed Abyss of Dungeons during its soft launch and ended service on January 20, 2026. None is playable today.

Is there a free Dungeonborne alternative?

Not an exact one. Dungeonborne's servers closed on May 28, 2025 and no free first-person fantasy extraction game has replaced it like for like. Dark and Darker's base version is free but requires a PC client download and keeps High-Roller mode and full marketplace trading behind a paid upgrade; Eldegarde, formerly Legacy: Steel & Sorcery, was removed from sale and went offline indefinitely on March 31, 2026. VAULTREAVE is the free, no-download option: the same dive, loot, extract loop with classes, gear affixes, and the choice between the safe exit and one floor deeper, playable in a browser tab on desktop or mobile. It is top-down 2D pixel art rather than 3D first-person, so it replaces the loop, not the look.
